Structure Presets

To make benzene draw with an inscribed aromatic circle and serif text, switch to the Textbook preset: click Preset: in the status bar and pick Textbook. A structure preset is a named set of drawing defaults (bond length, font family, aromatic ring display, lone-pair and charge sizing, arrow proportions and more) applied in one step. Molkit ships three: Traditional, Compact and Textbook. Element colors are set separately by the color scheme.

Switch presets

The status bar at the bottom right shows Preset: followed by the active preset’s name. Click it to open the preset dropup, then pick a preset. It applies to the current document right away.

Switching to a preset with a different bond length rescales the atoms in the current structure, so the drawing keeps its proportions.

New documents (File > New or the + tab button) start with the preset and color scheme you last applied. Before you have applied any, they start with Traditional and Black & White.

The preset dropup

Below the list of presets, the dropup has these actions:

Action	What it does
`Save Current as Preset…`	Asks for a name and saves the current structure settings as a custom preset, which becomes active. Element colors are not included; the prompt points you to `Export Style Bundle…` for that.
`Delete Preset "name"…`	Shown only when the active preset is one of your custom presets. Asks for confirmation, then removes that preset from this browser. Built-in presets cannot be deleted. The current document keeps its settings.
`Export Style Bundle…`	Downloads the current preset and element-color scheme together as one `.mkstyle` file named after the preset.
`Import Style Bundle…`	Reads a `.mkstyle` (or `.json`) file and adds its preset to your custom presets and its colors to your custom color schemes.
`Apply to All Tabs`	Asks for confirmation, then applies the active preset to every other open tab. Each tab keeps its own color scheme.

Custom presets appear under a Custom heading in the dropup and are stored in this browser.

Set up the preset and color scheme you want, for example Textbook with the CPK (Jmol) scheme.
Click Preset: and choose Export Style Bundle…. A file such as textbook.mkstyle downloads.
Send the file. Your colleague clicks Preset:, chooses Import Style Bundle… and picks the file.
A confirmation reads Imported style "<name>". Pick it from the preset and scheme menus. The import does not change the open document; your colleague picks the new entries from the two dropups.

Molkit checks the file before importing it. A file that is not a style bundle, has no preset or scheme, or needs a newer version of Molkit shows an error and imports nothing. If a custom preset or scheme with the same name already exists, a prompt asks whether to overwrite it; decline, and a second prompt asks for a different name (cancel it to stop the import).

What each preset changes

The values below come from the built-in preset definitions.

Bond length and geometry

Traditional: bond length 40, label clearance 3
Compact: bond length 28, label clearance 1.3
Textbook: bond length 40, label clearance 2.1

Compact draws tighter structures that fit more on the canvas. Traditional and Textbook use the same bond length but differ in spacing around labels.

Aromatic display

Traditional: kekule (alternating double bonds)
Compact: kekule
Textbook: circle (a single ring inside the aromatic ring)

Textbook is the only built-in preset that draws aromatic rings with the inscribed circle.

Bond rendering

Traditional uses a butt line cap with bond thickness 1.5.
Compact uses a round line cap with bond thickness 1.7, a smaller wedge width (1.5 vs 2.5), and fewer hash lines on dash bonds (5 vs 7).
Textbook uses a round line cap with bond thickness 1.5.

Fonts

Traditional and Compact use Arial, sans-serif for text.
Textbook uses Times New Roman, Times, serif.

Arrows and other proportions

Compact scales arrow proportions down: arrow stroke width 1.25, head width 4, head length 8, against Traditional and Textbook values of 1.5, 6, and 12. Lone-pair and radical dot sizes are also smaller in Compact (1.2 vs 1.5).

Modification tracking

When you change a setting that the active preset controls, a small orange dot appears next to the preset name in the status bar, and the name stays the same so you can see what you started from. To discard your changes, pick the active preset again in the dropup; there is no separate reset button. To keep them, use Save Current as Preset….

Opening documents that use a preset

When you open a document, reload, or switch tabs, a document on an unmodified built-in preset is brought in line with the current definition of that preset. If the preset’s bond length differs from the one the document was drawn with, the drawing is rescaled to match.

A document whose preset is marked as modified is left exactly as it is, with nothing rescaled or reset.
